Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

Ezekiel 43:1-2,4-7
Psalm 84:3-6,8,11
John 2:13-22

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Today the Church celebrates the consecration of the Basilica of St John Lateran in Rome. For many this is an obscure feast, yet it is one that signals the holiness of places where the life, death and resurrection of Jesus are celebrated.

It isn't however just a reminder of the sacredness of our churches, but a reminder that we too are the structure where the mysteries of Christ's love are revealed. We are the Church! We are holy and sacred because the Almighty God is pleased to have His Son live in us.

It is a concept that we tend to forget and yet in the many sacramental moments of our day - God is truly present with us and within us.

Let us then rejoice that God would humble himself not only to dwell in magnificent churches, but also in the tabernacle of every heart where the unending praise of His glory and love is sung.

Almighty God,
give us the grace
to be lovely in your sight,
that you might always be pleased
to find a dwelling place in us.

Amen
