St. Luke, evangelist

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:

2 Timothy 4:10-17
Psalm 145:10-13,17-18
Luke 10:1-9

A reflection on today's Scripture:

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Luke, writer of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. In today's Gospel from St. Luke, we learn from Jesus that the opportunity to harvest souls is abundant, that many souls are thirsting and waiting to receive the grace of salvation.

Today in the world, we have two large missionary fields: first, the evangelization where Christ is yet unknown; and secondly, the re-evangelization of christians who have grown cold and indifferent to the love of God.

We, who have gratefully received the fire of the Holy Spirit, are called to share and to make known the sacred truths, the light of Christ. We are called daily to re-ignite that fire enkindled within by the Holy Spirit as we interact with one another with holy love in all things.

If we have fostered God's love within our own hearts, then we must be bursting with desire to share the knowledge of God's grace with our brothers and sisters. For God in His love and compassion, wishes that they too might receive that same joyful grace of salvation. We pray that our lives may give witness always and that the mystery of God's love will come upon many souls in the vineyard this day.

Come Holy Spirit,
fill the hearts of your faithful
enkindle in them the fire of your love.
Amen
